Title: Admins may see the incorrect user added to a group in the Exchange admin center when users have the same DisplayName
User impact: Admins may see the incorrect user added to a group in the Exchange admin center when users have the same DisplayName.
More info: This also affects admins or users who are group owners and they may receive “failed to update member” error when attempting to add users to a group in the Exchange admin center.
Affected users may also be unable to add members to Distribution Lists (DLs) that they own using any Exchange Online connection method, such as the Outlook desktop app, Outlook on the web, and Outlook mobile apps. Admins can reportedly utilize PowerShell to successfully add users to DLs.
Current status: We’ve completed the development of our fix and initiated its deployment to a portion of the affected environment for validation before we deploy it more broadly. We’re continuing to monitor service telemetry as this progresses, and we anticipate that the fix will begin deployment to the remaining portions of the affected environment by our next scheduled update. We’ll provide an update on the deployment status, and a potential estimated time to resolve the issue should it become available, by our next scheduled update.
Scope of impact: Any admin or group owner attempting to add users to a group in the Exchange admin center may be impacted.
Start time: Monday, October 2, 2023, at 12:30 PM UTC
Root cause: A recent update to the Exchange admin center was configured so that the Name property is used when adding members to a group.
