Title: Users may be unable to play migrated Stream videos in Microsoft Stream
User impact: Users may be unable to play migrated Stream videos in Microsoft Stream.
More info: Users attempting play impacted Stream videos will encounter the error message: “This browser or app can’t play the video. Something might be outdated or supported. Try again using a different browser or app.”
Current Status: We’ve confirmed that Stream video files that migrated after the deployment of our fix on Wednesday, February 20, 2024, at 9:30 AM UTC, are not impacted. The remaining work is focused on restoring Stream video files that migrated during the impact window.
To address the remaining impact, we’re presently validating the effectiveness of a fix via testing in internal environments. Once this process is complete, we’ll deploy our solution across the affected environments to fully restore access to impacted Stream videos. In parallel, we’re scanning telemetry logs to gather a full list of impacted Stream video files to better target our fix.
Scope of impact: Any user may be unable to play migrated Stream videos in Microsoft Stream.
Preliminary root cause: A recent feature update that was intended to improve the process of the migration of files within Microsoft Stream contained a code regression that prevented migrated Stream videos from playing. We’ve addressed the underlying cause of impact and are now focused on restoring access to videos that were undergoing migration while the problematic regression was active.
