User impact: Users were unable to view images in the body of email messages in Outlook on the web.

More info: Specifically, affected users were able to successfully right-click paste images into the body of draft email messages; however, once the email message was sent the image cannot been seen in the email by either sender or recipient..

Affected users could have bypassed impact by using the CTRL + V keyboard shortcut to paste images into the body of email messages in Outlook on the web.

Final status: We’ve confirmed through monitoring and previously affected user reports that impact was remediated.

Scope of impact: Users serviced by the affected infrastructure who attempted to paste images into the main body of email messages may have been impacted.

Start time: Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 8:00 PM UTC

End time: Monday, March 11, 2024, at 11:30 AM UTC

Root cause: A recent update to the code base responsible for rendering media within email messages was missing an expected portion of code, leading to errors that resulted in impact.

Next steps:
– To help prevent similar impact in the future, we’re further reviewing update release procedures to identify missing code before being deployed.
