Title: Users’ SharePoint Online content search results may be missing or may disappear when pages load

User impact: Users’ SharePoint Online content search results may be missing or may disappear when pages load.

More info: Items in search results may appear to be out of date or incomplete. Items within the search index that may be impacted were created or updated prior to Monday, February 5, 2024. Any content added or modified after February 5, 2024, isn’t impacted. Source content isn’t impacted by this incident.

Current status: We’ve identified that our previous provided estimate of completing phase one of the repair was inaccurate, though we anticipate the completion is still on track to be completed by Saturday, April 20, 2024, which we’ve previously outlined in our communication update from Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Additionally, we still anticipate that we’ll need seven days of additional testing and validation to ensure phase one was successful, which we expect may start by our next scheduled update.

Scope of impact: This issue may impact the availability of some items when users perform content searches or use the News web part in SharePoint Online.

Start time: Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 5:21 PM UTC

Root cause: A search index discrepancy is causing access control properties to propagate incorrectly within SharePoint Online, resulting in impact.
