In early 2022, we made some improvements to OneDrive for Mac, and now we have two new features to share with our Mac users!
Syncing Special Characters: Mac users can now create files with special characters like “*:<>?/\|”. These files will sync to the cloud automatically without needing any renames. The special characters will appear as you entered them on your Mac but will be HTML-encoded on Windows, iOS, Android, and web endpoints.
Syncing to an External Drive: You can now choose a path outside your home volume for OneDrive and place all your OneDrive content on that external drive. Only a small amount of state is kept on your home volume, so you can free up space on your Mac. There are some requirements for your Mac and external volume to meet for this feature to work.
Filename FAQ: Only specific special characters will sync as-is. If you have other disallowed characters in filenames, you’ll need to rename them. Files with HTML-encoded characters will sync with a familiar name on your Mac. You can search for files with special characters as you normally would on your Mac.
External Drive FAQ: Users with macOS versions older than 15.0 will have the previous experience of using the external
