Microsoft Purview compliance portal: Customized retention policies for Audit (Premium) and 10-year Retention Add-On

We’re rolling out a new feature to enable customers with Microsoft Purview Audit (Premium) and the 10-Year Audit Log Retention Add-On for Audit (Premium) to create additional customized retention policies.

[When this will happen:]

Both short-term and long-term retention updates are now available in public preview. Rollout to general availability of short-term retention updates will begin in early July (previously mid-June) and is expected to be complete by late July (previously late June).

General availability of long-term retention updates will roll out in early December 2023 (previously mid-November 2023).

[How this will affect your organization:]

This new feature release enables additional customization on retention duration for Microsoft Purview Audit (Premium) and 10-year Audit Log Retention Add-On for Microsoft Purview Audit (Premium).

  • Currently, Audit (Premium) customers can retain data for 90 days (default), 6 months, 9 months, and up to 1 year. With this update, customers can now apply 7-day retention and 30-day retention.
  • Currently, Audit (Premium) customers with a 10-year add-on license can retain data for 10 years. With this update, customers can now apply 3-year, 5-year, and 7-year options for data retention.
